How a Caribbean Trip Turned Into Inspiration

Wanting to get away, I attended the University of the Virgin Islands – St. Croix Campus for a semester under an exchange program during college. Here’s a quick geography lesson…the US Virgin Islands is comprised of 3 islands – St. Thomas, St. Croix, and St. John. I attended school in St. Croix, which is the biggest island out of the 3. St. Thomas, which is north of St. Croix, is the most busiest and touristy because it’s a major port-of-call for cruise ships. St. John is the least populated island, but the most beautiful, because the majority of the island is a national park and therefore federally protected.

I was never really into photography, and even hated taking pictures of myself because I was camera-shy. Before the trip, my mom gave me a digital camera as a birthday present (a 2.0 megapixel Canon PowerShot A60). I have to say, it was my most favorite thing while I was in the Caribbean because it took BEAUTIFUL pictures!

I’ve received positive feedback from friends and family when I showed them my Caribbean pictures. Even though the area is naturally photogenic, my friend Natalie suggested that I sell them as postcards. Although I didn’t sell them, that comment alone sparked my interest in photography. From that point forward, I started taking more and more pictures, especially of landscapes and nature scenery. It also sparked an interest in visiting national parks because it gave me an excuse to take pictures.

Also, most of my personal designs has had a Caribbean influence to it, including this site. My inspiration was drawn from Cruzan Rum and Tommy Bahamas’ websites.

My visit to the Caribbean was a fantastic experience. During my trip, I also visited the other US Virgin Islands – St. Thomas and St. John, as well as Puerto Rico, St. Maarten, Martinique, and Antigua. Even though it has been almost 10 years ago, I still talk about and think about it to this day, and I’m dying to go back anytime soon!

Here are some of my favorite pictures:
